AM I REALLY THIRSTY?

“O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.” Psalms 63:1-5 NLT

What's the thirstiest you've been? It's difficult to remember a time that I've ever been thirsty. In fact, it's hard to remember a time I have ever been in want of anything that I
haven't had access to almost immediately. In my own life, I realize there isn't much suffering I've had to deal with. My life has been filled with all the amenities of food, water, heat in the winter, air-conditioning in the summer, a car to take me where I choose to go, money to pay my bills, and family that surrounds me. I don't really know need or want in a way that exasperated me. Sure, I've been hungry and thirsty, but I've never been at a point where I didn't have options to meet that need, whether it be at the next gas station or a meal at the table of family and friends. I say I long for God, His word, and His way...but do I? My life is so self-sufficient, I'm not sure how much I really depend on God. I thank Him for His provision, but maybe what I really need is to realize who I am without all my "bounty." Do I praise Him without my stuff? Do I still claim to love Him when I have nothing? Does His name still fall from my lips to tell of His goodness when I don't see His favor? Lord, thank you for blessing my life. Multiply my desire for you.
