I'LL HAVE WATER PLEASE

“On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches.” Genesis 2:2-10 NLT

Water is talked about throughout the Bible. The Lord created springs to water the earth. Those springs were the ones that "burst forth" during the Noah's flood experience. Many people just tell the story about water falling from the sky, but scripture says the water came out of the ground. Jacob's well is the central point of several stories including the woman at the well and the offer Jesus made for living water. Peter walked on water. Jesus turned water to wine. When Jesus died, blood and water flowed when His side was pierced. John baptized with water. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet with water. There are lots of references to water and lots of them come with a promise- a promise never to flood the earth again, the promise of repentance, the promise of life, the promise of a future in Heaven, and the promise that God will save us. I started this particular writing about a year ago. I've been waiting on a revelation about how all this water is tied together. I can't say that I've had any epiphanies, but I have had a few thoughts. The Lord created the world to be self-sufficient. Everything created has a job to do without question. Every animal, every fish, every plant, and every bug are subject to the very will of God and the program He built into them. They perform tasks without question. When adversity destroys their habitat, the begin again. No questions, no complaints save one...man. Yet, God made us dependent on one resource more than all others- water. The body can actually last for 2 to 3 months without food. It can only last around a week without water. We can't survive without it. Maybe that is why Jesus refers to Himself as Living Water. What He created for us physically in the beginning is just a taste of who He is. It allows us to live life physically, but His desire is for us to find water that satisfies us for a lifetime. I believe the spring of water he offers is much like the springs that furnished the Earth with water before it knew rain. It ebbed and flowed for one purpose, to provide the physical life. Jesus ebbs and flows in our lives for one purpose, to provide what we need for living in Him. The spring that He is, flows from within us and is life giving to all who will drink from it. Water provides the most essential part of our being with the ability to survive. Water cleans, water engulfs, water can exist as a liquid, a solid, and a gas. Water possesses many of the traits we associate with God and the ability He has to exist in many forms. No wonder science looks to the ocean to find the beginning of life. They can't believe in God so they choose to believe in something Godlike other than ourselves. The picture of mankind has been painted by God's hand, but we, because we are made in His image and bear His likeness, have a need to control our own destiny. We recreate the narrative to place ourselves in the driver’s seat. We are predisposed to explain God away and elevate ourselves into His position. Lucifer, the Angel of Light, had the same issue. He wanted to elevate himself into a position to be worshiped. It hasn't worked out so well for him. Given our success rate, it is still in our best interest that God keep the steering wheel.

Think about water in your life and just what it would be like without it. Do you rely on the Jesus as much as you rely on water or do you overlook Him and how necessary He is for our walk with God?
